![]() As I walked down the long quiet road away from our little red cabin I began to see the first signs of fall, beautiful golden leaves littering the path ahead. That’s all I needed to start the mental and physical transition from Summer to Autumn. This is my absolute favorite time of year, and honestly I start itching for it by August! So, it doesn’t take much for me to be swayed. A few changed leaves or some pumpkins for sale at a roadside stand... and it’s officially fall in my book! Perhaps the reason I love this time so much is that it allows for some incredible hygge! If this is a new term for you, let me take a crack at explaining it (as you can find many definitions) and then I’ll share with you how I create it in my home: At it’s simplest description Hygge (pronounced HOO-GA) is a Danish concept or feeling rather, that is created by atmosphere and experience. And since the Danes are famously known to be the happiest people in the world, I’ve become a bit awestruck by them and their lifestyle (and Swedes too if we’re being honest)!
In Meik Wiking’s book The Little Book Of Hygge he refers to it, aptly, as “coziness of the soul”, “taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things” and even “cocoa by candlelight”. He says “It is about being with people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling we are safe, that we are shielded from the world and allow ourselves to let our guard down.” “Like a hug without touching.” - Which we could all use right now! It relaxes me just to read about it... and it sounds lovely right? Because it absolutely is! To give you a better feel for how I experience hygge in my home, read on... Snuggling under a chunky throw blanket in my comfy nook, I curl up with my favorite rustic mug (made by a local potter) to sip on freshly pressed hot spiced cider and begin to get lost in a well-loved book with worn pages. I’m delighted by the smell of a hearty pot of soup placed on the stove to simmer and am reminded of this delectable time of year as the scents of clove, cinnamon, and pumpkin fill the air thanks to my glowing diffuser. As I look up from my book I pause to enjoy for a moment the tiny twinkle lights on my fireplace mantle that are intertwined with a small bounty of this season that was brought in from a roadside stand... pumpkins, gourds, and one giant pinecone. I snug my scarf around my neck a bit closer and return to my reading, ready to take notes in a vintage leather journal. I am overcome by and grateful for a special sense of comfort and peace that is unique only to Autumn. {Sigh} Are you ready for ALL the hygge in your home now too?! If so, I made you a cute fall hygge checklist!
